“ Taste in some tender funky soul blues?... “

Muziek kan generaties samenbrengen. Dit doet ook de Southern Soul met Billy Price en Otis Clay, terwijl Duke Robillard als producer vanaf de zijkant nauwgezet toekijkt. Billy Price, afkomstig uit Pittsburgh, PA, is de artiestennaam van de 70-jarige Amerikaanse soulzanger William Pollak. Price, een grote Otis Redding fan, geraakte in de belangstelling midden jaren ’70, door zijn samenwerking met bluesgitarist Roy Buchanan. Beiden tourden samen in de States en Canada en traden o.a. op in een van de meest vooraanstaande en prestigieuze zalen, de Carnegie Hall in NY en tijdens het Newport Jazz Festival. Price ging hierna solo verder en richtte de Keystone Rhythm Band op met wie hij tot in 1990 tourde in het oosten van de States. Hierna ging hij verder met The Billy Price Band. De line-up van de band is Steve Delach (gitaar), Paul Thompson (bas), Dave Dodd (drums), Jimmy Britton (keyboards), Joe Herndon (trompet) en Eric DeFade (tenorsax).

Billy Price bracht al sinds ‘Danger Zone’ [1993] 10 soloalbums uit. Opvallend zijn hierbij opnieuw de “samenwerkingen” met o.a. Otis Clay (‘This Time for Real’ [2015] – ‘The Soul Collection’ [1997]) en Fred Chapéllier (‘Live On Stage’ in Espace Manureva, Charleville-Mézieres, FR [2010] - ‘Night Work’ [2009]. Zijn nieuwste ‘Dog Eat Dog’ verschijnt volgende maand bij Gulf Coast Records. De muzikanten die met hem de studio deelden waren Alex Pettersen (drums), Jerry Jemmott (bas), Jim Pugh (keys), co-producer/ multi-instrumentalist Kid Andersen, de zoon van Johnny Otis, Jon Otis (conga’s & percussie), Eric Spaulding (sax), John Halblieb (trompet) en Jack Sanford (sax) én, nog een lange rij “gasten” waaronder Vicki Randle (Mavis Staples), Lisa Leuschner Andersen, Alabama Mike, Rick Estrin, Mike Zito en de Sons of the Soul (Walter James & Dwayne Morgan). 

Van de 12 tracks zijn 8 originele nummers. De opener “Working On Your Chain Gang” schreef hij samen met zijn vriend/toetsenist Jim Britton. Ook het atmosferische “Lose My Number”, “All Night Long Café” en “Toxicity” (met Guy Hale) schreven ze samen. Jim Britton zelf schreef “Walk Back In”. Zijn goede vriend Fred Chapélier schreef mee aan de funky blues song “Remnants” en de soul track “More Than I Needed”. Met Bill Troiani (‘Reckoning’) schreef Price de afsluiter “You Gotta Leave”. De track list is volledig met enkele covers: de titelsong “Dog Eat Dog” (een nummer van Richard S. Estrin), Bobby Bird’s “We’re In Love”, de blues klassieker van Otis Rush “My Love Will Never Die” en “Same Old Heartaches”, een nummer van de Steals Brothers (“Could It Be I’m Falling in Love” - Spinners) en dat voor het eerst opgenomen werd door de Impressions.

Billy Price mag zich ook na ‘Dog Eat Dog’ een soul man blijven noemen. Hij maakt het niet alleen live maar nu ook weer inde studio waar. Soul, blues en funk liefhebbers laat dit niet aan jullie voorbij gaan.
